Workshop in the Mind and Psychology Zone
No other emotion evokes as many negative associations as anger. We find this feeling uncomfortable and do not want to experience it. Furthermore, we often confuse anger with other emotions – such as rage or fury – turning it into a demon that destroys relationships.
Commonly, people try to vent their anger by ‘punching a pillow’ or ‘shouting and shaking it out’. However, anger cannot simply be shaken out or thrown away. It is true that one can find momentary relief and regulate one’s system by releasing the tension felt due to the previous suppression of the powerful energy that is anger.
We need to face our anger. To experience ourselves when we are angry. To experience ourselves when confronted with another person’s anger. To experience the flow of energy and its power, and to learn to be with it in real-life situations.
Societally, it is difficult to accept that this intense arousal and bodily reaction is a charge of great energetic power, carrying with it great vitality and expressive force. It is through anger that we can bring about change, express our opposition, defend ourselves, and stand up for what is ours.
Anger is one of the alarm emotions, enabling expression, protection, defence, as well as attack. It arises when our boundaries are crossed and when we experience pain, and it helps us to stop or escape from this hurtful situation.
Even if we understand that it is perfectly natural to feel anger, we still find it so difficult to stay with it when we experience it. We hold back.
Suppressing anger does not make it go away. On the contrary, the tension builds over time, often leading to an outburst – uncontrolled, and usually directed at someone other than the person who actually threatened our sense of security. It is precisely then that anger is often no longer just anger – it transforms into rage, and then the destructive force usually has absolutely nothing to do with the cause.
I invite you to a workshop where we will explore the source of anger and recognise that tension, experiencing its flow and safe expression. Please do not expect to ‘let your anger out’ during this workshop. I invite you to engage with the tension and the power of regulation – clearly, yet with respect for boundaries – through which we can connect with the power of our emotions.
