For years, I have been studying—in monasteries in Asia and at universities in the West, including Harvard—the striking similarity between elements of Buddhist bhāvana (awakening of the mind) and Stoic prohairesis (conscious directing of attention).
I have created a method of contemplation that draws on the best models of these two traditions—Buddhist practice and the theory of achieving the highest insight called Nirvana. I have created a method of contemplation that draws on the best examples of these two traditions – the Buddhist practice and theory of achieving the highest insight called Nirvana and the Stoic virtuosity in controlling the thought process in every situation in life. I have supplemented it with insights from other ancient schools of flourishing, such as Epicurean and Taoist, in order to offer you a method of contemplation that goes far beyond mindfulness training. The workshop is a meditative introduction to this method.
